Looking to spruce up your ageing desktop PC with a brand new graphics card? Or just looking for an affordable card for your new gaming PC? If you live in Singapore, the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 6GB is probably the best choice.
The GeForce GTX 1060 6GB was designed to compete with the AMD Radeon RX480 8GB at a similar price point. The general consensus now is that the RX480 is a slightly more capable card, and perhaps more future proof since its DirectX 12 performance is faster than the GTX 1060 and its DirectX 11 performance has caught up to the GTX 1060 after several driver updates.
There are lower memory versions of both cards in the form of the GeForce 1060 3GB (only $308 on Qoo10) or the Radeon RX480 4GB ($380 on Qoo10), but with the high-resolution textures used in today’s games, you’d be better off with the 6GB and 8GB versions to maximise the potential of the respective cards.
While the RX 480 8GB is priced the same as the GTX 1060 6GB on paper, unfortunately, the RX480 is considerably more expensive in Singapore. The cheapest RX 480 8GB card I could find is currently going for $379. On Qoo10, the cheapest costs $425.
On the other hand, Video-Pro on Qoo10 is currently selling the GTX 1060 6GB for $386. Surely, that’s not cheaper than the RX 480 at $379? The kicker is that Qoo10 often has a variety of coupons for you to offset your purchases (you can read our Qoo10 guide here). For me, I ended up paying just $326 for the GTX 1060 6GB after applying a $100 discount coupon and sharing it with my friend. For that price, you get an extended warranty of five years from the local distributor.
For just $326, I can now game in ultra settings in games such as Grand Theft Auto V and Battlefield 1 on my 1920×1080 monitor. If you plan to game at higher resolutions, perhaps consider the ZOTAC GTX 1070 from ASUS Gamer Shop instead. At just $500 if are able to get your hands on a Qoo10 $100 off $600 coupon (a comparable GTX 1070 sells for about $580 in Sim Lim Square), you get about 40% faster performance than the GTX 1060, allowing you to game comfortably at 1440p, and perhaps 4K if you turn down certain settings.
